Today I would like to share my experience feeding the Air traffic controllers at KLIT and our Facility Tower including the Tracon and Tower Cab. I'm going to talk about the tour of the facility. The control facility where the controllers work is called an up down where all the controllers are trained in ever position. These positions are Tower, Ground, Clearance Delivery, Approach and Departure.
First the tour was amazing. It was more than anything I would ever expect. I've been flying privately since 2013 and never got a tour until that day. We had to be buzzed into the secured parking lot and were met at the door by the ATC supervisor and another controller. We greeted them with the food and introduced ourselves to them. We then followed them to there break area to put down the food so they could help themselves to it. After we put the food down, the Supervisor asked if we wanted to go for a tour and of course us being pilots, we said yes. We visited the radar room or tracon room where Approach and Departure control are and we got to ask questions and we got too look over a controller working. He also showed us some of the buttons and how ATC puts airplanes into the system. While we were there, one of the controllers, came down from the cab and into to the radar room to ask who had brought the chick fil a. He gave us a big hug and he thanked us for doing this for them. After the radar room we visited the tower. The tower where the ATC actually controls from is called the cab. Here you can see a 360 degree view of all the airport activity. When we got up there, our buddy was controlling the tower frequency. After his hour or so on the frequency, he got a 45 minute break to talk to us and grab some food. We talked flying and what controllers can do to improve on and what us pilot can do to improve. We also got to pass strips back in forth between the two controllers working in the cab. One controller was working the tower frequency and the other one was doing a ground/CD combination. We stayed talking to them for at least 2 hours and got to see many commercial jets and business jets takeoff and land. But with all that was seeing four F/A-18s come over head and do a break and land on runway 22R.
